social media platform twitter A few changes have taken place since new owners took over in 2022. Now, a new plan could see the company selling account-related items for the first time.
What Happened: Tesla CEO Elon Musk has sought change and increased its revenue on Twitter since acquiring the social media platform for $44 billion in 2022.
The New York Times reports that Twitter may sell old account usernames in an online auction.
According to sources, negotiations have been underway to sell the username since December.
The report follows Musk’s comments that it wants to free up 1.5 billion usernames by eliminating inactive accounts.
“Clear account deletion that hasn’t tweeted or logged in in years,” Musk tweeted.
Musk’s tweets have raised concerns about the inactive accounts of those who have passed away and whether those accounts can remain a tribute of sorts.
A list of potential usernames has not been made public by Twitter or Musk, but it would get a lot of attention if it did.

Twitter does not allow the sale of usernames between users or through the marketplace. Musk hasn’t reported or said anything, but it’s possible Twitter will eventually allow username trading and take a portion of the payments as a new revenue stream.
